SSAA Orange

While the Orange branch of the SSAA is a relatively recent development having been incorporated in 1997, the range itself dates back to the late 1800’s for district sharpshooting events of that time.  Then more formally used as a Military training range and camp for the Boer War until the military reserves ceased use in the late1980’s, still, the Butts 1860’s and martini 1900’s mantelet is still evident, as are the varying mounds at each distance the shooting took place. A grenade-training pit and the evidence of grenade training are other hangovers from military use. The Range has been named after Sir Neville Howse VC for his long-serving military service and service to the Orange district. More recently a new stop butt was built and a shed now shelters the firing line from the sometimes-questionable Orange weather.

Now a Rimfire (22lr, etc) and Air-rifle range only.

The Sir Neville Howse Rimfire Range, is situated on the edge of the city, is open every Sunday morning from 10am till 12noon, for a host of Rimfire competitions including Field Rifle, Practical  Field Rifle, 3-Positional, Bench rest and General Target Practice. Some of the matches have been added to the range approval which has been selected to be shot in poor weather conditions that are unsuitable for other competition; this includes positional, rapid-fire and Offhand, giving good practice for both the field and for your next competition event. 

We welcome all visitors and new shooters (with and without a firearm licence) only $5 range fee, let the Range Officer of the day know that it is your first time at this range, they will help you with all enquires and the range rules and events of the day.

During daylight savings, the range is open every Wednesday night from 5pm for Bench rest competition and General Target Practice competitors the use of standard velocity ammo, on this evening shoot would be appreciated.

There are around 300 members of the Orange Branch SSAA including ladies and juniors, and the president and committee would like to encourage those members who have not been to the range recently and invite any interested visitors to come down for a shot or just a chat.
